👤 Who Was Nirbhaya?

“Nirbhaya” (meaning Fearless) is the symbolic name given to the 23-year-old medical student who was gang-raped and tortured on a moving bus in South Delhi on December 16, 2012. Her identity was protected as per Indian law, but her strength became a symbol of courage.

🕒 Chronology of the Crime:

December 16, 2012 (Night): Nirbhaya and her male friend boarded a private bus from Munirka, unaware that it was operated illegally by six men.

She was brutally gang-raped, assaulted with an iron rod, and left naked on the roadside.

Her injuries were so severe that several internal organs were damaged.

She died 13 days later in a hospital in Singapore.

6 Accused: Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma, Ram Singh, and one juvenile.

Ram Singh allegedly committed suicide in Tihar Jail.

The juvenile was sentenced to 3 years in a reformation home and released in 2015.

The remaining four were awarded the death penalty.

After several mercy petitions and legal delays, they were executed on March 20, 2020, at 5:30 AM in Tihar Jail.
